May, so far has been a month of reflection, rebuilding, discipline, and getting back into alignment with the goals I truly care about. Life has been moving fast, but in the middle of all the chaos, I’ve been learning how important it is to slow down, focus, and pour energy into things that genuinely matter.
First things first your girl is officially hired for summer mermaid performances, which means we are BACK on our fitness journey full force. Mermaid work is no joke. It takes stamina, flexibility, breath control, and confidence, so I’ve been recommitting myself to movement and wellness again. Between swimming, stretching, and rebuilding my endurance, I’m stepping back into performance mode.
As part of expanding my mermaid performances, I’ve also been putting more focus into education and interactive entertainment for children. I’ve started learning more about ocean animals, sea creatures, and marine life facts so the performances become more immersive and magical for kids. I’m even incorporating sign language into the act to help teach children sea creatures and simple ocean-themed words in a fun and engaging way. Representation, creativity, and accessibility matter to me, especially when working with children.
And of course… your girl could not stop there.
I decided to fully commit to the fantasy and create an entire mermaid music project alongside the performances. That means a full-fledged album and YouTube channel dedicated to keeping children entertained, engaged, excited, and immersed in the magical underwater world we’re building. Between the music, storytelling, visuals, ocean education, and character performances, I really want this to become an experience kids remember long after the party is over. It’s honestly been one of the most fun creative projects I’ve worked on in a long time.

Speaking of Skimble it is officially golf season, and this year I’m determined to build more community around it. One of my biggest goals is to connect with more Black women in the Boston area who either golf, want to learn golf, or simply enjoy the vibe of being at the golf course with good drinks and good energy. I want to create a real Black girls golf presence here in New England. Representation matters, and sometimes all it takes is one group deciding to show up consistently and create space for themselves. Whether you’re experienced or completely new to the game, the invitation stands.
Now for the business update, the Shopify store is currently down. Honestly, a lot of that comes down to my own inexperience and trusting the wrong “professionals” and “experts” to help manage projects that were important to me. I’ve learned some hard lessons about business partnerships, delegation, and protecting your vision. At this point, I’m no longer working with anyone on that project, and I’m taking things back into my own hands. Sometimes you really do have to return to the drawing board, regroup, and rebuild from scratch. It’s frustrating, but it’s also empowering because now I know exactly what I want moving forward.

Because of that reset, both the Oak Bluffs Inkwell swimsuit collection and the New England Black Girls Golf apparel line will officially be postponed until next year. I’d rather take my time and do it correctly than rush something unfinished into the world. The vision is still alive just delayed, not abandoned.
Leading up to Comic Con in Connecticut, I try to participate each year for my kids. I’ve also been putting myself on a serious financial discipline plan. My current goal is to work hard toward purchasing a vehicle, which means I have to stop the unnecessary spending, impulse shopping, and random emotional purchases that quietly drain money over time. I’m learning to create balance, prioritize needs over wants, and become more intentional with my finances. More importantly, I want to model those habits for my son so he grows up understanding budgeting, patience, and financial responsibility.
One thing helping me stay focused is creating an Amazon wish list for necessities instead of buying everything impulsively. This way I can slowly chip away at things I truly need while staying organized and realistic about spending. It may sound simple, but for me this is part of building a healthier lifestyle overall mentally, emotionally, and financially.
In wellness news, I recently teamed up with Curious Elixirs to create craft cocktail experiences infused with adaptogens designed to help people relax, unwind, and hopefully reduce dependence on alcohol culture. I’ve become increasingly interested in wellness alternatives that still feel luxurious and enjoyable without damaging your body in the long run. So far just my family tried it and they had to mix it with Tito’s because they couldn’t understand it’s an elixir. My next challenge, however, is going to be far more difficult: reducing sugar.
Anybody who knows me knows this will probably be the hardest task of my life because I still love baking and creating desserts packed with sugar, butter, and all my artisan ingredients. But growth is about honesty, and I know healthier habits have to become part of my future if I want long-term wellness and balance.
Last but definitely not least I launched my Virtual Bake Stand. This idea honestly makes me so happy because it combines creativity, community, and small business support all in one place. The virtual farm stand showcases images of the baked goods I create from my cottage kitchen, allowing people to pre-order treats directly from me. I even added a small shelf area dedicated to featuring products and businesses from my friends because I truly believe we all deserve opportunities to make money together. Collaboration over competition will always be part of my mindset.
So that’s the May update from the world of Lela Love Lee rebuilding, refocusing, getting healthier, creating community, learning discipline, and continuing to dream bigger even when plans shift.
Thank you for reading and supporting this journey.
